history_groupThe Redwood City Police Department (RCPD) has served the community since the City's incorporation in 1867, when an elected Town Marshal - supported by the Sheriff's Office - provided the city's first police protection. The role later evolved into Police Chief, with a second position added in 1913.

The Department operated out of shared spaces around the city until its first dedicated station was built on Middlefield Road in 1957. RCPD has been headquartered at its current location, 1301 Maple Street, since 1993.

Today, the Department has 98 sworn officers along with numerous support staff, providing law enforcement services to Redwood City and Redwood Shores. Our team works across specialized units including Traffic, Crime Scene Investigation, K-9, SWAT, Marine Patrol, and Community Policing.

Our motto, "Providing Excellent Service with Integrity and Respect," reflects our commitment to working in partnership with the community to protect life and property, improve quality of life, and reduce crime and the fear of crime.

A Few Interesting Facts:

  • RCPD's history stretches back to Redwood City's founding in 1867 - nearly 160 years of continuous service to the community.

  • The Redwood City Police Historical Society was formed specifically to preserve and promote the Department's history; those with historical documents or items to donate can contact the Department directly.

  • The Department's first dedicated police station, built in 1957, stood on Middlefield Road across from today's City Hall before the move to the current Maple Street headquarters.
