Investigations
The Investigations Division is responsible for the follow-through work that begins where patrol response ends. When a crime requires more than an initial police report, such as extended evidence collection, in-depth interviews, surveillance, or coordination with outside agencies, it's handled by this division. Investigators build the cases that lead to prosecution, working major crimes such as homicides, robberies, sexual assaults, and burglaries, as well as more complex matters involving organized crime, narcotics trafficking, and financial fraud.
The Division is made up of General Investigations, the Street Crimes Suppression Team, the Juvenile Unit, and a Crime Analyst, each contributing a distinct set of skills to move a case from initial report to resolution.
General Investigations
General Investigations detectives handle the broad range of crimes reported to the Department. They follow up on cases referred from patrol, interview victims, witnesses, and suspects, gather and analyze evidence, and prepare cases for the District Attorney's Office. Detectives work closely with other units and outside agencies to build thorough, prosecutable cases.
Street Crimes Suppression Team (SCST)
The Street Crimes Suppression Team is a proactive, plainclothes unit focused on identifying and disrupting ongoing criminal activity before it escalates. SCST targets street-level crime, including narcotics activity, gang-related offenses, and repeat offenders, often working in coordination with General Investigations and Patrol to address crime trends in real time.
Juvenile Unit
The Juvenile Unit investigates crimes involving minors, whether as victims, witnesses, or suspects. The unit includes a Juvenile Detective with specialized training in investigating juvenile offenders, and a Family Services Specialist who takes charge of cases involving minor offenses and first-time offenders, working to identify alternatives to prosecution where appropriate. Personnel assigned to this unit apply specialized training in working with youth and families, coordinating closely with schools, child protective services, and the juvenile justice system to ensure cases are handled appropriately and sensitively.
Crime Analyst
The Crime Analyst supports the Division by identifying patterns and trends in criminal activity across the city. By analyzing crime data, the Analyst helps detectives and command staff direct resources where they're needed most, connect related cases, and anticipate emerging crime trends before they grow.
Court Liaison
The Court Liaison serves as a link between the Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and the courts. The liaison supports the exchange of case information and documentation, helping investigators and prosecutors stay coordinated as cases move through the criminal justice system.
