The Patrol Division is led by the Patrol Captain, who reports directly to the Chief of Police. As the Department's largest division, Patrol provides the primary uniformed police presence in Redwood City, responding to calls for service, conducting proactive enforcement, and serving as the first point of contact for most interactions between the community and the Department.

What the Division Oversees

The Patrol Division is organized into three main areas:

  • Patrol Operations forms the backbone of the Department's day-to-day police work. Uniformed officers respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, patrol neighborhoods and business districts, conduct traffic enforcement, and investigate crimes in progress. Community Service Officers support these efforts by handling non-criminal calls, assisting with reports, and providing additional public-facing services, while Parking Enforcement Officers monitor compliance with parking regulations and issue citations throughout the city.

  • Communications Unit staffs the Department's dispatch center around the clock, answering emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching officers to calls for service, and coordinating radio communications between field units. Dispatchers serve as the critical link between the community and responding officers, often providing life-saving guidance to callers before help arrives.

  • Crisis Response Clinician works alongside patrol officers to provide specialized mental health expertise in the field. The clinician assists with calls involving individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis, helping connect people to appropriate care and resources while supporting officers in de-escalating and resolving these situations safely.
